Archery Arrow Broadheads
Broadheads are the preferred choice of bowhunters for taking down large game quickly and efficiently. They are designed to create a large wound in the target animal, thus quickening its death while creating a bigger blood trail to help with tracking the injured prey. Two main types are available, fixed blade and expandable, sometimes referred to as mechanical broadheads. A mechanical broadhead more closely resembles a field point, expanding upon impact. The fixed blade type retains its cutting diameter throughout the flight of the arrow.
There are many opinions and much discussion regarding the pros and cons of fixed blade vs expandable blade broadheads. Some bowhunters prefer the characteristics and stopping power of the fixed blade versions, while others like the larger diameter wounds created by mechanical 3 blade expandable broadheads. The expandable versions use clips or rubber bands to secure the blades during flight, something many bowhunters dislike.
Most manufacturers offer both types of broadheads. The fixed blade type comes in 2 blade, 3 blade and even 4 blade versions. Expandables generally have a chisel point designed to damage bone and have either 2 or 3 cutting blades. Carbon Express has even created a parallel blade expandable broadhead designed to remove flesh, thus causing greater blood loss.
