Survival Gear

Preparedness is essential when faced with a life-threatening situation. Disasters, natural as well as man-made, occur frequently enough to encourage at least a basic knowledge of what to do, what to take, and where to go when the need arises. The recent hurricane outbreak of 2017 in the United States is proof of the need to prepare for the unexpected well in advance. A survival preparedness plan is much like carrying insurance – you hope its never needed but it is important to have just in case.

Many things should be considered when developing a survival plan for your family. The time to assemble your disaster kit is not right after the impending event is announced on the evening news. Recent forest fires and hurricanes have caused store shelves to empty rapidly as people attempt to stock up on essentials at the last minute. News reports after the event show the tremendous damage caused and the great need by those affected for assistance. Don’t be caught unprepared. FEMA recommends that families put together an emergency 72-hour kit for each family member. Every kit should contain non-perishable food and a 3-day supply of water. Other essential items include spare clothing, medications, and a cell phone charger. Also include cash and a credit card as well as important papers. Pack them in plastic bags to keep them dry. A backpack for each person is a great way to assemble and store the basic items you might need in an emergency and is also easy to carry.

It is a fairly simple task to create a list of additional things to include in your personal 72-hour kit. If you think you will be forced to survive outdoors for a while, include a multitool knife, fire starters, a compass, tarps to make a shelter, blankets and warm clothing. An old-fashioned paper map of the area is also a good idea in case your GPS doesn’t work. Don’t forget to include a first aid kit. All of these items may not fit in a backpack but should be stored in a spot that is readily accessible in case the need to evacuate quickly arises. There are too many options available to list them all here. Click on any of the items shown below to open up a complete array of possibilities. Remember, the MOST important part of preparedness is to plan ahead.
